THE LORDS TAVERNERS U15 CUP

LORDS TAVERNERS FINAL 7/7/11

On a very rain affected day Portsmouth Grammar School and Denstone College conspired to produce an enthralling game of cricket. It is testimony to both sets of players that they kept all the Spectators, Managers, Coaches and Supporters on tenterhooks.

Portsmouth Grammar School won the toss and elected to bat on an excellent wicket produced by the Oakham groundstaff.

An early wicket was lost when Sam Collinge-Wells went for nought. There then followed a magnificent stand of 133 between Jack Marston and Henry Farrant before Farrant was out for 40. Four wickets then fell for 7 runs as Portsmouth struggled as Denstone fought back strongly.

Portsmouth finally reached 191-9 at the end of their allotted 40 overs. Denstone College then began what was to be an exciting chase to pass the Portsmouth score. In spite of numerous rain interruptions both sides just "Got on with the job". Denstone lost at early wicket at 17. The second wicket fell at 76 and then two in succession at 80. 7 wickets had fallen by the time Denstone reached 148.

Denstone fought back again using up their allotted overs to reach 183 – 9 – 9 short!

A great game, in spite of the rain ending with Portsmouth the victors. The ESCA Chairman, Chris Hassell congratulated both teams and also thanked Oakham, the Groundstaff, the Caterers, the Umpires and Scorers as the presentation ended proceedings.

Man of the Match: Jack Marston
79, a wicket and a vital catch.
